BackTimesTen is an in memory relational database developed by Oracle company. TimesTen is designed for low latency, high volume data, events and transactions management. Data in TimesTen database are stored directly in memory, there’s no need for I/O operations on harddisk. As in memory data processing is much faster than processing on harddisk, TimesTen is used in environment where high availability and predictable response time are needed – network environment, telecommunications, real-time finance applications and large web applications. TimesTen relational database can be accessed by SQL commands.
The only restriction of TimesTen database is size of available memory, where data are stored.
We used Oracle TimesTen database in products DARE1 and DARE2 for T-Mobile Czech Republic. DARE is data rating engine running in geographical cluster, processing few hundreds of requests per second.
